“We are most nearly ourselves when we achieve the seriousness of the child at play.”

– Heraclitus

Today after we finished up cleaning the house the girls retired to Uma’s room…watching videos on TV and on iPhones…even I, myself, was guilty of plopping on the couch browsing instagram and pinterest…

Then I stopped and remembered that I had recently read this blog entry from A Cup of Jo and was inspired by the idea of taking the kids out EVERY single day of the year. I went to check on them and I was like…it’s happening RIGHT NOW. They were sitting on the bed…vegging out on devices…I said okay girls get your shoes on…to heck with waiting until the first of the year to make an honest attempt at getting them outside everyday. IT STARTS TODAY…and it did.

First we hung out in the front yard and I had them chase leaves to catch them before they fell on the ground. It was funny. As I recall back when I lived in Kentucky me and my friends used to do that…it was the most fun when there were tons of leaves that fell at once…we would just laugh and laugh and jump around trying to catch leaves. I can’t wait until the leaves really starts falling hard here…I think the girls would have a ball dancing in the leaves. That is what childhood should be like…

After we played for a minute we went on a walk and looked for pretty leaves to collect. Ava was quite selective in her collection and Uma seriously tried to bring home every leaf.

When you play like this…play like a child…with all the seriousness of curiosity…you are then truly and nearly yourself…

Love & Moonlight,

Kelly

P.S. get the kids out in nature…and away from the digital world. Bringing it back to old school playing…
